of lessons from the last election. and what i would like to see us do, and what i'll talk about today, is really explaining and demonstrating why we are for the things that we're for. >> i want to begin the hour talking about immigration, both on capitol hill and the white house. and joining me to do that from the white house is nbc news correspondent, kristen welker. so, kristen, nbc's first read is talking about and describing this as flooding the zone. but john boehner really refusing to endorse the path to citizenship that's been talked about. so what's the strategy as we go down the wire here? we have just one week to go until the state of the union. >> reporter: well, thomas, the strategy is for the president to try to define and set the tone of the issues that are being discussed, before congress can do it. and as you point out, he does have a pretty strong bully pulpit right now, because he is exactly one week out before his state of the union address. and of course, the big sticking point right now between this white house and republicans is that idea of a path to citizenship
revenue, where were the spending cuts? now again he wants to raise taxes. i think it's time for us to cut spending. >> now with 1,379 days gone since the last time congress passed a budget and with the country poised to take a poison pill of cuts, what will it take? >> not passing a budget is shameful. and now you have the president saying well, i'm against the sequester cuts. well okay, great. well what are you going to replace them with? >> the republicans have other ideas. put them on the table. let's make a small deal. if we can't get to a big deal, he would like to get to a big deal. and he's invited them over, any time. >> so let's dive in right now. joining me is maryland's democratic congressman chris van holland, ranking member of the senate budget committee. right now house speaker boehner is telling reporters it's time iffer the president as well as senate democrats that they need to do their job to avoid the sequester in itself. what's your take on how this is going to all crack out? is it going to go down to the wire? >> well, thomas, first of all, the across the board seques
of the first time was he didn't tell the people where he's trying to take the country so he will use minnesota which you mentioned, it has a record of reducing violent crime particularly gun crime over the last decade. a decade and a half. you saw this last week, the president did it on immigration. he will do it again here with gun control. he will keep doing it and try to mobilize the american people to sort of put pressure on congress. >> chris, you would think the president would get the most support from within his own party. when we talk about harry reid and his affiliation with the nra, we are reminded of his thoughts about the nra this weekend with george stephanopoulos. take a look. >> i have been supported by the nra on occasion. i know wayne lapierre. he has always been extremely pleasant to me. we have a good relationship. so i am not here to demean the organization. >> not there to demean the organization. he has been a benefactor of campaign contributions from them. the nra spending in 2012, just to show everybody, $1 million in direct contributions to elected leaders, $25 millio
